John Francis Anthony "Jaco" Pastorius III was one of the most well known Bass guitarists in history. Primarily, the Bass guitar is used to blend in the background of music and to provide the low sounds in music, but Jaco Pastorius was one of the only people to use it as a solo and lead instrument. Jaco is also famous for popularizing the first fretless Bass guitar. He realized that without the frets on the neck of the guitar, he could make the instrument sound more melodic. Jaco also referred to frets as a hindrance while he was playing.
